Shooting & Editing Videos Right on Your PS3

This video was recorded using the LOOT Active Camera in PlayStation Home and edited on my PS3. The steps to producing this video was fairly simple and only required a bit of time editing the clips and selecting the music on my PS3.

Tips:

  1. Take short 1 to 2 minute clips of each scene using your LOOT Active camera although the length you actually use after editing may be 20 to 30 secs.
  2. Try to mix it up with different zoom in/out or pan/scan techniques. Don't over do it.
  3.  Using lighting in dark environments (something I should've done but failed to bring out the lights during recording).
  4. Add a intro and closing title
  5. The video editor on the PS3 doesn't have the ability to add transitions between scenes so use your imagination in adding clips.

Having the right editing tools make the world of difference on which type of video you can produce but as seen with this video you can make a fairly decent video using the Video Editor on your PS3.

What I could I have done differently?

Like I mentioned earlier, I could have used lights in some scenes. The ending could have been better somehow. I could have shot a scene of someone sitting at the end of the bed yawning or better yet used the green screen in the LOOT apartment of somoeone's avatar looking outside a window into the real world. Oh yea! I must mention the green screen for those who aren't familiar with it. If you're using it, make sure you're using video editing software that supports chroma key or the green screen effect.

In total (from shooting the scenes in Home to editing via my PS3) this took me approximately an hour. The editing even at a basic level is always time consuming. This is why it's best to work with small manageble clips.

2011 PlayStation Home Music Video Contest

Announcing the 2011 PlayStation Home Music Video Contest

I know it doesn't seem possible but this year we're taking this contest to a new level of engagement thanks to Sony's LOOT's Active camera where anyone with a  LOOT Active camera and a YouTube account will be able to participate; something that was very challenging back in 2009 when I first announced the PlayStation Home Music Video Contest. So, I'm very excited about the contest this year and expect to see tons of entries from the Home community.

So what do you have to do? First, if you haven't already done so, head over to the LOOT store in the Mall and pick up the Sony LOOT Active Camera. Then, check out http://youtube.com/editor. Login or Sign up for a FREE YouTube account. Click the Audio tab to expore the music selections available. It's recommended to use the licensed audio tracks available on YouTube.com however since your videos will fall under fair use copyright laws you're welcome to use whatever music you like. Now, once you've found a song you like, come up with a story around that song for your video. Remake a real-life music video but with a PlayStation Home spin on it. Or Come up with a completely new one. Get your friends to participate in shooting the video. Be creative and have fun with it! Upload it to your YouTube Channel from within Home or to your PS3 hard drive for editing via your favorite video editing software (not required). Make sure your video is public and include 2011 PlayStation Home Music Video Contest in the title.

Post a link to your video by December 31, 2011 11:59pm PST as a comment on my YouTube Channel (youtube.com/raausar) or this post.
